KOTBR #35 - Schlafly and Ommegang

Our beloved senior Beer Geeks have outdone themselves yet again, and have proven that this newly dubbed Knight of the Beer Roundtable has much to learn. After paying a visit to my humble hovel this Thursday last, for a tasting of some of Schlafly’s finest wares, these noble imbibers have graced us with some of their talent at composing prose and poetry. I will not attempt to match their wit or adroitness with a quill, but will relate their assessments to you in the order that they crossed my threshold. The beers reviewed are: Ommegang Abbey Ale (provided as a warm-up by Jim), the 2006 & 2007 Schlafly Barleywine Reserve, and the 2007 & 2006 Schlafly Imperial Stout (provided by Mike, Gina, and a Hoosier Beer Geek ally now living in St. Louis) (and yes, I realize I transposed the years from the Barleywine to the Imperial Stout, that was the drinking order).

CHRIS, who was suffering a cold (I’m amazed Nantucket never came up)

Ommegang, our warm-up beer, is from Belgium.
After sipping it I said, “Hell, Jim!”
I’ve had it before,
But this sucks even more.
In fact, it smells worse than a male’s gym!” 1.5 mugs

From Schlafly did four beers we taste,
But my share was likely a waste,
Though thankful I am they were free,
three to me kinda tasted like pee,
So then to Deano’s did I make haste. 2.5 mugs – Barleywine 2006, Imperial Stout 2006 & 2007

The one I liked was the barleywine, version 2007.
I think it was sent from either St. Louis or Heaven.
Though it smelled like earth and corn,
It can’t top lipstick lesbian porn,
But both get my engines fast revving. 3.5 mugs

MATT (who was there first, but is the newbie of the group)

Ommegang Abbey Ale – 3.75 mugs (in the style of H.P. Lovecraft)

Upon first taking a tentative draught of this elixir, I found myself terrified of the eldritch horror that all humans instinctively know, but pragmatically suppress when they taste a beer that bears such an uncanny similarity to wine and tastes of cherries. The smoothness and caramel flavor could easily lull one into complacency about his place in the world. Too many of these might push one over the brink of madness into a world of non-Euclidian geometry and forgotten deities who might destroy his liver without effort or care.

Welly welly well…I had a peet of both pivos and was sharpened up for a bit of the old ultra-chatting. Oh my brothers, the 2006 was all gorgeousness and gorgeosity and went down real horrorshow, with a bolshy taste of alcohol and a malenky bit of chocolate. In the 2007 your friend and humble narrator tasted more sladky sugar and hops but less nose. Moloko-plus it wasn’t, but this malchick isn’t complaining.

Schlafly Imperial Stout 2007 and 2006 – 3.5 and 3.25 respectively
(in the style of Dune)

Under the rule of the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, the production of beer had suffered greatly. Not since the Butlerian Jihad had such sorry brews passed for beer in the Imperium. We thank Shai-Hulud that Emperor Paul-Muad’Dib has a taste for more than the Water of Life! The vintage of 10,192 AG (2007) is worth it’s weight in spice, tasting of wood, caramel, and bourbon. The latter is a fine brew, likely to be favored by Mentats to chase the bitter taste of sapho, as it is quite sweet, and with less bourbon than its successor. Drink without rhythm.

Todd of the dead at Keg Liquors (617 East Lewis and Clark Parkway, Clarksville, IN) gives us a heads up (and chops heads off) with this update from Indiana's southern edge:

Several new things down in the Southern part of the state. Keg Liquors moved into their new building at the beginning of October. We went from a 2700 square foot building to a brand new 5000 square foot building. We now have a 28 door cooler for beer and wine, including 10 doors just for craft and good imports.

New beers this week include: Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, Founder's Backwoods Bastard, Boulder Killer Penguin, 2008 vintage, Great Divide Hades, Great Divide Fresh Hop Ale, Breckenridge Christmas, and what seems for the first time, and almost unlimited amount of Founders Breakfast Stout. No allocation on it for the first time.

Morton’s The Steakhouse Hosts Chimay Beer Tasting on November 11

Portion of Proceeds to Benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation®

Morton’s The Steakhouse in Indianapolis is offering a divinely delicious Chimay beer tasting event on Tuesday, November 11 at 6:00p.m. Chimay is the world-renowned Belgian ale created and brewed by Cistercian Trappist monks for more than a century at the Abbey of Scourmont in Chimay, a small town in southern Belgium. Morton’s guests will sample three different authentic Chimay ales accompanied by Morton’s Petite Filet Mignon sandwiches, Tuna Tartare Canapés, Sliced Smoked Salmon and Morton’s Legendary Hot Chocolate Cake. The ticket price of $45 per person includes tax and gratuity and Morton’s will donate $5 from every ticket to the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. Guests will also receive a special gift – a Chimay glass goblet – as they quench their thirst for a great cause. Morton’s will offer expert tips on savoring the legendary ales, which are brewed in the monastic tradition at the Abbey and made with all-natural ingredients and water from the Abbey springs.

The Chimay selections at Morton’s tasting event will include:

* Chimay Première – First introduced and brewed by the Trappist monks at Chimay in 1862, this original-recipe ale has a warm dark red color and a soft fruity taste with a slightly bitter touch.
* Chimay Grand Réserve – This dark brown ale has relatively dry taste with a caramel touch and a complex aroma.
* Chimay Cinq Cents –This golden blonde ale offers a subtle balance between softness and fresh bitterness, with a fruity aroma.

The monks of the Abbey of Scourmont at Chimay have been brewing their legendary ale since 1862. Chimay is always brewed on site at the Abbey, which guarantees its authenticity and quality. The production and distribution of Chimay Trappist beers is performed by S.A. Bières de Chimay. Chimay is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its introduction to the United States.

Morton’s is donating a portion of the event proceeds as part of its national “30 Wishes for 30 Years” campaign to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The first Morton’s steakhouse opened in Chicago in 1978 and Morton’s is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a fine dining leader. Through a series of special events, Morton’s has raised more than $150,000 so far to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation and its mission of granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

1) Last Call for November Beer MBA Classes (November 8th, 15, 22nd). They will run from 3:30 - 6:30 pm. As people are saying, “If you like beer, even a little, then definitely make time for this course – You won’t regret it!”. I’m getting some great testimonials from attendees on these classes, and I hope to get some posted to the website soon, but overall everyone is finding them to be a lot of fun, very educational and a great value. 2) This Saturday, Nov 1st is National Teach-A-Friend-to-Brew Day, so to celebrate, that’s exactly what I’m going to do! Starting at 9:00 am, at my home near 116th and Michigan Rd. on Indy’s NW corner, I will start from scratch and brew a 10 gallon batch of beer. Also, there are now 3 others signed up to brew, so there will be a variety of systems being used and styles being brewed. If you have any interest in brewing, or brew already, but want to learn more, etc., this will be a great opportunity for you. There is no cost to attend, but consider bringing some beer and snacks to share. I will supply some beer to sample as well. Brew days are long, so we probably won’t finish up until around 4:00 or so. Plan to stay for the whole day if you can (and if you really want to see the whole process), or just stop in when you can. Either way, let me know if you are interested. Also, if you plan to attend, please remember to drink responsibly and/or arrange for a designated driver. This will be a fun day. Let me know.

3) Several people have asked about Gift Certificates for the Beer MBA classes. These are available and are a great idea! Consider purchasing them for the November series and giving them as an early Christmas gift. I don’t know exactly when the next series of classes will be, but they will be after the first of the year (probably Jan or Feb), so if you prefer that perfect gift for Christmas Day, this is it. I will supply you with an attractive Gift Certificate “Scroll” placed inside a capped empty beer bottle that must be opened with a bottle opener to get to (you just pay the shipping or pick it up at no additional charge from my NW Indy office). For an added effect, use this bottle to replace one of the bottles in a 6-pack of great beer and give the whole package. That way, the recipient gets something right then, as well as later (I can even help with recommendations on the beer if you wish). Let me know about this as soon as you can, since I probably won’t sell more certificates than what would fill one class.

We'll be releasing Nelson, an American Pale Ale and our version of this year's Indiana Replicale, in the Tasting Room on Friday, August 26th. Firefly Wheat, Norwegian Blue and Abbey Normal are all still around, but quantities are limited and they can mostly be found in places other than the brewery. August will bring the return of Big H, our traditional Bavarian Hefeweizen, followed by Pale Ryder (the final installment of our Spaghetti Western themed Hop Trilogy) and then on August 25th Grapefruit Jungle will be making a triumphant return!

Brew Haven Craft Brew Festival
Saturday, August 6   2pm-6pm   New Haven, Indiana

Samples of over 100 different beers from more than 30 breweries will be poured at the First Annual “Brew Haven” Craft Beer Festival. Many of the brews will be rare or seasonal including (but not limited to) special offerings from Upland, Flat12, Sun King, Mad Anthony, Sam Adams and New
Belgium.

Five Star Distributing, World Class Beverages, Cavalier Distributing and Aalco Distributing are lending their support and will also be present at the festival. Brewers Art Supply will be on hand to help explain the hobby of homebrewing. Old Crown Coffee Roasters will be pouring their own kind
of brew. And finally, the members of M.A.S.H. (Fort Wayne Homebrew Club) will be pouring 50 of their own handcrafted beers including some that recently won awards at the Indiana State Fair Brewers’ Cup, one of the nation’s largest homebrew competitions.

Tickets can be purchased at Trion Tavern or through www.triontavern.com. Advance tickets cost $25 and include: unlimited samples, a souvenir tasting glass, a meal and water. A limited number of tickets will be sold the day of the event for $30. Designated driver tickets will also be available for $5. A portion of the proceeds will go to the New Haven Downtown Improvement District. This will be a smoke-free event both under the tent and inside the bar.

Leading the fight against cystic fibrosis, the Indiana Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation will again host the twelfth annual Buffalo Wild Wings Presents FESTIV-ALE, A
Celebration Of Beer Tasting, Brought to you by Kahn’s Fine Wine and Spirits. The event will
be held Saturday, August 20 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 200 S. Meridian (corner lot of Jackson and Meridian Sts.)
“Anyone 21 years or older wishing to positively impact the lives of individuals affected by cystic
fibrosis is encouraged to attend,” said Tiffane Dobbs, Development Director for the Indiana Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “With nearly 90 cents of every dollar raised from this event going to support research, patrons will have a great time taste testing a variety of beers and appetizers while supporting a very worthy cause.”
The event brings together beers from over 30 Indiana and Midwest microbreweries and distributors.  For those who prefer alternative beverages, samples of specialty martinis from Subterra will also be featured.
In addition to sampling beverages, guests will also be able to sample tasty cuisine from several area restaurants. Further, all guests will have the opportunity to participate in an Instant Bar raffle, bid on silent auction items from local establishments, play cornhole sponsored by Circle City Athletics and enjoy music from one of Indy’s hottest bands, Sour Mash 7.

Flat12 Bierwerks, a craft brewery that opened January 2, 2011, is celebrating its 1st Anniversary on Saturday, the 14th of January. The brewery will tap a special brew called “Winter Cycle”, a Double IPA that comes in at 9.2 ABV/107 IBU.

In addition to the tapping on Saturday, the brewery will hold a cookout, featuring local food, live music and special surprises throughout the day. In the run-up to the Saturday event, Head Brewer Rob Caputo and his staff plan to offer a variety of specialty and barrel-aged beers in the tasting room on Thursday and Friday.
